The process

Our process has been developed over years of experience and tweaking, to focus on our client journey and experience.

Our process

Concept to Completion / Design & Implementation

  • Our key priority at the beginning of the project is to understand every element of your brief and ascertain what you want to achieve within your space. We combine the initial brief meeting with a site survey, where we first and foremost gather all key dimensions for every area within our scope and obtain all pieces of physical information we need from site / discuss initial architectural plans if a new build site.

Another priority at the initial visit is to meet the on-site team (if already engaged and the project is underway). We pride ourselves in developing super successful working relationships with our trades.

  • The next phase is to begin building your space in 3D. We model every facet as this is the only way your space can be completely understood - 100% clarity is achieved if the design is created from the volume of your space, rather than just 2D plans.

We have a team dedicated to interior architecture, specialising in spatial layouts, joinery and lighting / electrical design. Considering function, flow, and experience, we explore the architectural plans / existing space as a starting point to ensure that you’re maximising every single inch of your space and the investment you’re making, working from the core of your brief to ensure your plans are perfectly tailored to suit it.

We then present you with a spatial presentation to sign off, along with concept imagery as an introduction to the overall ‘look and feel’ direction, based on the initial brief. This phase is different for every project; some spaces have multiple options for you to choose from, others have an obvious direction.

  • Our incredible team of designers work with the architectural team to transform the now developed spatial plans into detailed designs. This phase includes all finishes, materials, colours, bespoke joinery & upholstery, and ‘off-the-shelf’ items which are designed, modelled and rendered in photorealism, allowing you to see every tiny detail. This is where all the concept and spatial work are translated into a design with life and depth.

We present this to you in the form of a VR walk through, so you can transition through the space/s and see every inch of the design created. You will also receive a design presentation detailing the materials, exact chosen pieces, design rationale, and a visual snapshot for each individual space.

This phase of our client experience is something we’re super passionate about and is unique to us at JMD. When you’re undertaking a large project, it’s so important that you understand every single design decision - the way we communicate the design is the only way you can truly guarantee this.

  • Once the design has been fully signed off, we then deliver the technical drawing pack. This phase of the delivery includes every detail and dimension required to implement the design.

This deliverable is a technical drawing pack for contractual and supplier utilisation, including partition plans, lighting / electrical, wall elevations, finish plans, custom joinery drawings and custom upholstery drawings. Attention to detail is within every aspect of the designs we create, so it’s incredibly important these details are communicated effectively.

  • The selection and sign off for all finishes, materials and fabrics is typically something that is undertaken much earlier in the process. We choose to do this slightly later in the process, as for us it makes total sense for you to be making selections on cushion & curtain fabrics, wood finishes, and joinery details when you understand the design as whole, having taken time to digest the design from the VR and have perspective of what the overall vision is.

We cost every single element of the interior design so you can stay in control of your budget. Every project is different, but we can present this to you in a number of ways determined by the project schedule and phasing of the project: space-by-space, by category, or by build phase.

  • Once all costings have been signed off, our procurement team gets to work on placing orders and organising the logistics of scheduling all deliveries of all design scope items in line with site and project scheduling. Our team looks after all ongoing communication and liaison with suppliers and manages the full procurement process.

  • Jessica May Design look after all design management, working alongside the principle contractor and on / off site team to deliver the project to the upmost quality and level of finish. We have developed a collection of partners that deliver all of our design scope across the entire project, from contractors and flooring installers, to joiners and upholsterers, we are incredibly particular about who we put our name to and have spent the past 10 years building our ‘black book’ of suppliers. We work in close proximity to the on-site team and third party makers to ensure the design and project are delivered to the highest standard, with regular site visits and communication.

  • Seeing the project through from day one until the last candle is placed is the only way to fulfil the true potential of your space and the design created. We do all our installations in-house at JMD, and they are completed by the same team who created the design, resulting in your beautiful new space being handed over to you totally finished.

FAQ

  • We cover the entirety of the UK & Abroad. If the project aligns with the quality of project we deliver for clients we’ll travel far and wide!

  • All of our projects receive a unique fee proposal after an initial enquiry call with our Director Jess. Every project is different, so we don’t work off a standard pricing structure, we ensure the service we’re offering is exactly right for the individual client & project.

  • Generally, the sooner the better! In the context of a new build project or large scale renovation, as we like to be heavily involved in the spatial layout of the interior spaces and naturally this can impact architectural plans. Jess can provide more in depth information about this when you book in for the discovery call.
